Week 1

This Blog: Reflection & Team Introduction

Chemical Product

- One word from the broad category: Household

- One word from the sub-category: Appliance

- Chemical product: Refrigerator

- Chemical engineering principles: Vapor-Compression cycle, Heat transfer

- Category: Chemical Device

(Although it is not considered as a miniature device, refrigerator does not fit in any of the other categories; commodities, molecular products or micro-structured product)

The chosen product is a refrigerator. The refrigerant evaporates completely to absorb the heat from the surrounding region to be refrigerated. The refrigerant will leave the evaporator and then enters the compressor to increase its pressure so that it can reach the condenser. The gaseous refrigerant is then cooled back into a liquid state where the heat is released into the surrounding. The refrigerant is ready to absorb heat through the evaporator again.

Figure 1: Vapor Compression Cycle

More details of how the cycle works:

The refrigerant, which is the working fluid in the vapor-compression cycle, absorbs and rejects heat as it circulates the refrigerator.

The refrigerant starts as a gas and is compressed in the compressor which will increase it's temperature and pressure. The condenser then cools the hot and high pressure refrigerant, and the refrigerant is then converted into a liquid phase. The expansion valve, also known as a throttle valve acts as a regulator which separates the high pressure and low pressure side. Its throttling effect dictates the compressor delivery pressure which must be sufficient to give the refrigerant its boiling point which is higher then the cooling medium. The pressure drop through the regulator causes the boiling point of the refrigerant to drop, so that it will boil at the low temperature of the evaporator. Lastly, the evaporator boils the refrigerant back into a gas, at a very low temperature. The change in state from liquid to gas absorbs the heat (heat transfer) from the evaporator which in turn removes the heat from the insulated refrigerator box, thereby lowing its temperature. The refrigerant is then returned to the compressor and the cycle repeats.

Team Retreat

1) Sharing an umbrella under the rain 💧💧

2) Having a good game of chess ♔♚

3) Exercising together😫

4) Group Photo after bonding😃

5) Team Name: F4 (Fantastic 4)

As we all strive for good results, we try to be perfect and fantastic in our group work. Moreover, we will also be a fantastic friend, and team player. Since we are team 4, and we have 4 members, the number '4' is in our team name.
