This Blog: Ideation, Screening and Selection

As our pyrolysis idea was not feasible to be done in school, thus we have decided to change our idea.

New Idea: Self-Cooker

Research Gap - Heating Element

Heating Element (Constant Heating)

Substitution

Use induction heating instead of using a material to be the heating element

Combine

Warm + Heating (Cooking)

Adapt

Change shape of base and heating element

Modify

Rounded base

Double Stirrer

Ingredient Compartment

An opening on the lid

Put to another use

-

Eliminate

-

Reverse

-

To further improve on the product, we have decided to add an opening on the lid. This enables us to add spices or anything ingredients while the self-cooker in cooking.

With spice compartment having the highest score of 285, it is our chosen idea.

The weightage for usefulness is given the highest of 30% because the design to be added on to our self-cooker has to be useful.

The next  highest weightage of 25% is given to money. This money includes the cost to buy all required materials and the transportation fee. A large expense can exceed our budget of SGD$2000.

Thirdly, the weightage of 15% is applied to machinability and ease of maintenance. Machinability is how easy we can build the product with the new idea. Easier machinability can help to simplify the building process. Ease of maintenance refers to how easy it is to maintain or repair when defects are found.

Fourthly, the weightage of 10% is given to the Availability of Parts. We want our product to have the required materials obtained easily. Some materials which are uncommon can waste a lot of time to find.

Lastly, the weightage of 5% is given to appearance. Although appearance is an important aspect, the other criteria are more important. Appearance does not affect how the machine works which is the most important. However, we added appearance as some customers prefers appliances with nicer appearance.

In conclusion, our idea of adding a spice compartment is the best suited among all the criteria listed. It does not require many materials, and the required materials are common, cheap and easy to purchase. It is useful as other self cook machine may not have the function to add ingredients when it is cooking. With this idea, when the self cook machine has started. we still can add on ingredients which are needed to be added during the process of cooking such as herbs etc. Moreover, if we forget to add any ingredient, we can put into the spice compartment. This will prevent the opening of cooking lid, and preventing hot steam from escaping which can slow down the process of cooking.
